Alturas de Machu Picchu is the seventh studio album by the Chilean band Los Jaivas, released in 1981, and probably the most important and popular of all his discography. In it, the band use the poem by Pablo Neruda, of the same title, published in his book Canto General, 1950. In this poem, the poet sings, captivated by the grandeur of human creation that he witnesses in the ruins of Machu Picchu in Perú, about the glorious indigenous past of Latin America, human misery, death and pain that the majesty often results in those who forged. The poem is one of the most significant of Neruda's poetry, and music composition from The Jaivas has been regarded as brilliant and faithful to the original content of the work.

“the performances have a dash and abandon that are genuinely convincing...The sense of occasion and spontaneity of a live recording is conveyed without artifice.” --Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2010

“Is this early, folk or world music? All three...An exuberant and spontaneous creative energy is sustained throughout, while the presentation is lavish and scholarly.” Sunday Times, 23rd May 2010 ****
“The line between early and world music is blurred, the roots of Latin American jazz exposed...the diversity of instrumentation and voices (from Montserrat Figueras and Furio Zanasi to Leopoldo Novoa) lends depth and colour and the rhythms are infectious.” The Independent on Sunday, 20th June 2010
“Here are foot-tapping thrills, secular in spirit even when sacred, strummed by jolly strings, peppered with ethnic percussion, or streaked with the brightly burnished soprano of Montserrat Figueras. Lush documentation as usual with AliaVox, but the best prize of all is the music and musicians’ warmth and humanity.” The Times, 22nd May 2010 ****

“This is a beguiling, mesmeric sequence of instrumental music from Armenia, in which Hesperion XXI are joined by a group of that country’s finest musicians...[The duduk's] beautiful, musky sound seductively reflects the predominantly nostalgic, lamenting, soulful mood of the pieces heard here.” --Sunday Times, 2nd September 2012
“Haunting and tragic, this CD is a double-lament — for Jordi Savall’s late wife, the singer Montserrat Figueras, who loved Armenian music, and for Armenia, with its long history of foreign subjugation and massacre...It is hypnotic and exquisitely melancholic.” --The Times, 25th August 2012 ****

". . . expect lively Latin rhythms, trumpets a-plenty, and some of Karl Jenkins' trademark Adiemus close-harmony singing . . . the music gradually builds in intensity . . . unmistakably Adiemus . . . [Canción turquesca]: Rolando Villazón's unmistakable vocals alone bring incredible depth to this bittersweet song. And Milos is back once more, adding with a touch of Montenegrin passion into the mix . . . [a] relaxed jazzy feel running through the album . . . A high-energy trumpet solo from Pacho Flores, the Venezuelan trumpeter, ensures the album ends with a bang." --Record Review, Classic FM (London), July 2013
“classical-world-jazz fusion tracks, where colour and texture matter more than anything, musical substance included. Each of the 13 tracks, heavy with Latin-American influences, is named after a different hue” --The Times, 4th July 2013 ***

“This is an entrancing CD, with dances, laments, and feast-day songs linked in a slow-quick-slow structure. Perhaps as an implicit tribute to Montserrat Figueras, there are no vocal numbers, but the musicians Savall has assembled from the relevant countries display a wonderful range of virtuosity.” --BBC Music Magazine, September 2013 *****
“The stunning virtuosity and musicianship of the star line-up of instrumentalists… it is a delight to hear them unplugged and working with a sensitive and truly international collaborator… I find myself taking down Alia vox recordings very frequently for listening pleasure.” --Early Music Review, October 2013

“Avital's follow-up to his superb recording of Bach concertos only confirms that we already knew: that here is a musician who recognises no boundaries except those of good taste, and who has the artistry to persuade listeners to follow him anywhere.” --Gramophone Magazine, February 2014
“The six Bartók miniatures of the Romanian Folk Dances are deftly managed, with subtle string washes setting off Avital’s delicate filigree picking, and De Falla’s “Siete Canciones” offers the broadest range of tempo and emotion. But the most satisfying is Piazzolla’s highly rhythmic “Fuga y Misterio”” --The Independent on Sunday, 2nd February 2014 ***
